How Many Times Do You Renew Your Books?

My library allows its patrons to renew books 3 times, assuming the item in question isn’t on hold because another patron is waiting for it. I almost always end up renewing my books the allotted 3 times, at three weeks per renewal.

So…what happens is that I check out far more books than I can possibly read in three weeks, then I keep them for nine weeks. I just began yet another renewal period -online, of course- and wondered how many other library users do this too.

Or am I the only one?

Cool thing about our library which may explain why I still use it (as do many locals) even as most people around the country shy away from use of the public library.

    1. There are more than 15 branches county wide, and if a branch farther away from your area has an item, you can simply click “request book”, and it’ll show up at your door some time within the next 10-14 days. Free of charge. We still have to take them back ourselves. Can’t have everything.

    2. Lots of electronic books that I can check out and load onto my Kindle using One Drive. Very convenient.

    3. My kids just like the experience of sitting in the library browsing and reading books.

I am always shocked when I run into people (IRl or Online) who question if anyone goes to the library anymore. It’s actually one of the few things our tax dollars pay for that is in my opinion, worth the money.

I check out 12, get 3 read by the due date, renew the other 9, read two more, take those back by the new due date, and check out two more while I’m at it to pile on to the 7, and so on and so on. I’m a frequent renewer. I need a support group, LOL.

It occurred to me (as I am currently in a library crisis of a lost book) that your library took you for an awful lot of money. At ours once the fine reaches $5(roughly 3 weeks overdue) they just charge you for the cost of the book. That is usually significantly less than 75 bucks and if you bring the book they refund it and just charge you the fines accumylated.

That sounds like a fair system. This library was a local college library and allows certain countys access. They like to keep their fines steep though. Our “local” library has a horrible selection and their parking is even worse. Put I think their fine system is more reasonable.
